Women In Technology - Friday Links - 18/11/2022

Published on November 21, 2022

Dear Friday Links enthusiasts,

If you remember, several weeks ago we asked for your feedback on FLs !
Thank you all for the great feedback you provided !

Main outcome was that everyone loves the variety of our content.
We also understood that you wait the FLs on time. We will try do our best ; )

Here is our collection for this week :

Expanding your horizons (EYH) Biennial Science Event was held last Saturday

The event link.

“The event caters to girls aged 11 - 14 years old living in Geneva and the surrounding region. The event is completely free. The EYH Science Event combines fun and hands on experiments. There are workshops in both French and English, delivered by local professional women in the field of science, mathematics, engineering and technology.”

Of course WIT@CERN was participating together with RightsTech Women and partner and CERN Micro Club to couch young girls.

Here is a LinkedIn link from RightsTech Women.

Patrizia Azzi quoted on her personal instagram page :

"Had a great time at this edition of @eth_geneve at UniMail. With the brilliant CERN @wit team(see 3rd pic), we animated a great workshop “what is a web site?”"

A very good news: Anna Grassellino awarded New Horizons Prize in fundamental physic

Link from Fermilab.

She received the award “for the discovery of major performance enhancements to niobium superconducting radio-frequency cavities, with applications ranging from accelerator physics to quantum devices.

“Anna’s groundbreaking discovery of nitrogen doping has had a revolutionary impact on SRF technology, put Fermilab on the map as a world leader in SRF, and is a testament to her creativity, focus, hard work and determination,” said Fermilab Director Lia Merminga.

An other very good news: Breaking the glass ceiling!

Post from Delegation of the European Union to the UN and other international organisations in Geneva:

“Doreen Bogdan has just been elected with an overwhelming majority as new Secretary General of the ITU, the UN agency for digital technology. She will be the 1st women ever to lead the organisation in its 157 years of existence! With her experience & leadership the ITU will have an opportunity to meet today’s challenges & bridge the digital divide.”

You can read more about her here.

Today is LGBTQ+STEM DAY

The Pride in STEM organisation is calling for support in social media. They suggest the following hashtags: #LGBTSTEMDay or #LGBTQSTEMDay .

You can find an interesting post from Louise Zelia Carvalho who is the Diversity & Inclusion Programme Leader at CERN. You can read more about her here.

The D&I group also has newsletters if you are interested subscribe to this e-group.

Would you like to submit a manuscript for young minds ?

“Frontiers for Young Minds is committed to providing high-quality, plain-language articles about cutting-edge science. Researchers have a chance to reframe their own recent research and publications into language that can be understood by a younger audience. Authors need to respond to and integrate the feedback provided by their Young Reviewers.” Submit your manuscript here.

There is a new collection from the journal: The Nobel Collection

“This Collection brings you articles by Nobel laureates, written specifically for young minds. In this first-of-its-kind collection, Nobel Prize winners explain their amazing discoveries and describe how they accomplished them. These Nobel laureates share their thoughts on research and what it means to be a scientist, and they even provide advice for becoming a successful researcher and living a happy, meaningful life. Like all Frontiers for Young Minds articles, these articles have been reviewed and approved by kids!”

Here are some reviewers, imagine at that young age you are given the opportunity to review a paper from a Nobel laureate. Images are taken from this article.

A very interesting documentary this weekend in the cinema

This is a documentary from a friend of our colleague Florentia Protopsalti.

It is mainly in French, and it has French subtitles when the people in the documentary speak English or Swiss German. You can find it in the small cinema Cinelux in Geneva where they prefer to show movies of new artists. It will be shown on this Saturday and Sunday at 19h20. Here is the link.

We translated the subject in to English using google translate : )

“Virginie, Petra and Estelle are stunt performers. They are run over by cars or beaten by violent husbands and gangsters, often repeatedly. And each time, they get back on their feet, ready to shoot the scene as many times as necessary. Freedom, glory or the search for power fuel the desire of these women to push their bodies to their limits. But what violence are their bodies and minds capable of withstanding? The film questions the way in which cinema and television distribute roles and violence on screen.”

Call for volunteers

For the seventh year running, CERN, the University of Geneva’s Scienscope, EPFL and the Annecy Particle Physics Laboratory (LAPP) will be joining forces to celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. From 30 January to 3 February 2023, female science ambassadors will visit local schools to talk to the pupils about their profession. The aim is to change how schoolchildren view scientific, technical and technological professions and to show that they are just as accessible to girls as to boys.

Who is eligible:

• Registration is open to all women working in a profession connected with science, technology, engineering or maths (STEM), as well as computer science, communication or education.

• Priority will be given to presenters from CERN, the University of Geneva, EPFL and LAPP. If you are not from one of these institutions but would like to take part, contact the CERN local engagement team.

• You will be required to deliver one-hour presentations for a maximum of 30 pupils aged 7 to 15.

• The majority of presentations will be given in French (95%), but some may also be given in English.

• You will be required to attend a briefing session.

For more information and to register, visit https://cern.ch/wis-internal.  Registration deadline: December 11 at 23:59.

Opportunity for students

Applications are now open for the 2023 CERN Openlab Summer Student Programme!  Are you a bachelor’s or master’s student in computer science, mathematics, engineering or physics? Do you have a strong computing profile, and would you be interested in working on advanced computing projects at CERN during summer 2023?  If so, visit the link (or forward it to your students) to learn more and apply.  Applications close at noon CET on January 30, 2023.
