Hello everybody,

Christmas holidays are almost there, but not quite yet!

Here is our selection of Friday links.

Workshop, Conferences and Events

The CERN and Society foundation supports some public events in the Globe. One of them is a special show “Voir l’invisible” on 7 December 2022 at 10:30

The Geneva Graduate institute is hosting the screening of the movie “Fair play: Gender balance at home and at work” on 7 December from 16:00 to 18:00.

Book your agendas for 9 Friday December from 17:00 to 20:00 on an after-work visit at the CERN Mechatronics, Robotics and Operations labs with Eloise Matheson, followed by drinks.

Registration is mandatory since there is only space for 50 people maximum.
The visit is in the Prevessin site; if you are interested but have difficulties with transportation please let us know and we could arrange some car-sharing close to R1 and R2.

Past events and presentations

WIT was present during the coffee break of the last occurrence of Connecting the Dots https://indico.cern.ch/event/1079391/ for CERN newcomers.

It was a nice occasion to describe our activities and have a discussion with CERN newbies and we hope that some of them have already subscribed to this newsletter.

The LHC career networking event 2022 took place on 21 November 2022. Visit the Indico agenda https://indico.cern.ch/event/1203356/timetable/#20221121.detailed if you wish to know about the experience of some CERN alumni such as Giorgia who has transitioned from Particle physics to Data science, https://indico.cern.ch/event/1203356/contributions/5079841/attachments/2550988/4394354/GiorgiaRauco_CernNetworkingEvent_21112022.pdf, Caterina who went from Physics to school teaching or about Alex who went from Physics to detector technology in industry https://indico.cern.ch/event/1203356/contributions/5079843/attachments/2551585/4395640/CERN_career_event_winkler.pdf.

November 25th was the international day for the elimination of violence against women. WHO gives us hints on how we could help bringing awareness on the topic. https://www.who.int/news-room/events/detail/2022/11/25/default-calendar/international-day-to-eliminate-violence-against-women

On Monday 28 and Tuesday 29 November we attended a talk by Dr Stephanie Hare, author of the book Technology Is Not Neutral: A Short Guide to Technology Ethics
https://indico.cern.ch/event/1214023/

https://indico.cern.ch/event/1214024/

The recordings will be made available soon.

Last Monday we met at Pathé Balexert and watch the movie “She said”, which we found very well done and stimulating https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i5pxUQecM3Y .

It was also a very nice occasion to meet and share points of view before the movie.

Articles and links

You might find this informative article from the CERN D&I news on Neurodiversity here.

An interesting piece of news that shows how often women are asked questions that men would seldom get https://www.bbc.com/news/world-63803342.

And this article on how companies might be dealing with the new limits on abortion in the US https://www.wired.com/story/apple-wont-let-staff-work-remotely-to-escape-texas-abortion-limits/.
