Women In Technology - Friday Links - 16/12/2022
Hello everyone, and welcome to the last Friday links of 2022!!
The annual CERN closure is approaching, and hopefully we will all have some time to relax and recharge. Why not take advantage of the break to catch up on some of the Friday links you might have missed during the past year? The WIT Steering Committee and organisers have put together a list of their favourite articles of 2022, which you will find below. We also have some job postings, in case you plan to polish your CV over the holidays, and a sneak peek at the next WIT events to come in 2023.
Speaking of WIT events, last Friday, we enjoyed a fascinating visit to the Mechatronics and Robotics lab. Thanks to Eloise and her colleagues for such a fun and informative evening! You can find photos of the event on our Instagram account. It was wonderful to have an in-person lab visit again, and we are looking forward to more in 2023!
On behalf of WIT SC, I would like to wish all of you a very happy and healthy holiday season! We hope to see you at a WIT event in the new year!
Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah, and best wishes for 2023!

A little holiday spirit:
- Here in Geneva, we recently celebrated the Escalade, which commemorates the night of Dec. 11/12, 1602, when Mère Royaume helped to defend the city against the attacking Savoyards by throwing a pot of soup out the window. We all love the miniature chocolate “marmites” filled with marzipan vegetables, but do you know the woman who threw the famous pot of soup? Learn more about her here!
- Are you looking for a last-minute gift for that special physics enthusiast in your life? Perimeter Institute has prepared a gift guide for physicists and those who love them! (I’m particularly fond of the gorgeous and *free* posters of influential women in physics!)
WIT best of 2022 Friday links:
Here are our favourite stories of 2022! Sometimes they made us smile, and sometimes they made us frown, but they always made us think! Enjoy this retrospective on 2022 from the WIT team!
- Are you planning a job search in the new year? Have a look at this video about updating your CV for industry from a CERN Alumni event.
- Be the Change: the film. Sexism isn’t always easy to spot.
- CERN’s Gender Equality Plan was formally endorsed this year. Here’s hoping for more progress toward equality in the new year!
- An interview with Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space.
- Saying “no” in science isn’t enough. Women still bear the burden of work-related tasks that do not advance their careers.
- The secret history of 19th-century cyclists. "The bicycle is in truth the women’s emancipator. It imparts an open-air freedom and freshness to a life hithertofore cribbed, cabined and confined by convention.”
- “I felt like the comics were written about me, for me, and only me.” Diversity matters when choosing superheroes!
- 40 telling women in technology statistics. "Women have been a vital part of the tech industry since the beginning, but somehow they’re not only still underrepresented, they’re also leaving the field more rapidly than ever before.”
- Without investment, gender equality will take nearly 300 years. “Gender disparities are worsening in the face of “cascading” global crises – such as the COVID-19 pandemic, violent conflict, and climate change – coupled with the backlash against women’s sexual and reproductive health and rights.
- BBC 100 women of 2022. Every year-end recap needs a top 100 list! Here are some of the most influential and inspiring women from around the world.
