Women In Technology - Friday Links - 24/03/2023

Published on March 24, 2023

Hello everyone,

Spring is here!  We hope you are enjoying the longer days and first spring flowers.  In this week’s Friday Links, we celebrate the legacy of Emmy Noether, and examine the issues faced by working mothers in Switzerland.  Don’t forget to sign up if you want to participate in our mentoring program or volunteer for the Django Girls workshop, mark your calendars for our next WIT lunch, and scroll down for a wide selection of upcoming events, schools, and job postings!

Cheers,

Kate, for WIT SC

Emmy Noether

March 23 is the birthday of Emmy Noether, a brilliant mathematician whose insights into symmetry and conservation laws formed the foundation of modern physics.  And yet, she remains relatively unknown.

  • In her short life, mathematician Emmy Noether changed the face of physics.
  • This series of short videos from Perimeter Institute describes Noether and her work, with increasing levels of complexity, from kindergarten up to PhD level.  (And you can also download a gorgeous poster to decorate your office!)
  • The European Physical Society recently awarded the 2022 Emmy Noether Distinction to Monika Ritsch-Marte and Ilaria Bardo.  Congratulations to both!

Flexible work in Switzerland

The fields in the countryside surrounding CERN are filled with spring lambs and calves.  But what about people raising children in Switzerland?  Flexible work culture and the working mom in Switzerland.

Last call for volunteers for Django Girls 2023 edition!

To celebrate the International Girls in ICT Day, CERN will organise another in-person edition of Django Girls. This programming workshop for girls and women aged 15 and over will take place on the evening of Friday, 21 April 2023 and all day on Saturday, 22 April 2023. With coaching by CERN tutors, the participants will learn how to create a blog and launch it online. Django Girls will be held at IdeaSquare, in English and French.  This year we are looking for volunteer coaches to lead the workshop. The registration for volunteers closes this Sunday!  Learn more and register to volunteer at https://indico.cern.ch/event/1261506/

WIT Mentoring Program

We are thrilled to announce the launch of the 6th edition of our mentoring program. This program offers you the opportunity to connect with each other and learn from each other's experiences through either 1-on-1 or group mentoring, and is open to all members of personnel regardless of their gender, age or professional background.

We are seeking mentees who are eager to learn and grow in their professional careers. Likewise, we are also looking for mentors who are willing to share their expertise and help mentees develop their skills and reach their goals.

If you are interested in becoming a mentor or a mentee, please fill out the application form by 2 April (mentees) and 23 April (mentors): https://indico.cern.ch/event/1246888/We will then match mentors and mentees based on their needs, interests, and availability.

For more information, visit our webpage: https://wit-hub.web.cern.ch/mentoring/  or contact the program coordinators at [email protected].

WIT Lunch with Paula Grzegorzewska

Are you interested to learn more about Open Source Projects?  If yes, join us on Thursday, March 30 in Restaurant 2 (Building 504) for a lunch break at 12:00 with Paula Grzegorzewska, before her academic training lecture ("How to maximise the impact of Open Source projects on technological independence, competitiveness, and innovation") in the IT Amphitheater on Friday, where she will discuss the study on the impact of open source on the European economy she co-authored and the need for a change in how innovation is measured, as well as policy measures needed.

Schools

  • The 2023 European School of High-Energy Physics (ESHEP2023) will take place in Denmark, 6-19 September 2023.  The School is targeted particularly at students in experimental HEP who are in the final years of work towards their PhDs, although candidates at an earlier or later stage in their studies may be considered. The deadline for applications is 21 April 2023. Sponsorship may be available for a few students from developing countries. Further details are available here: https://indico.cern.ch/e/eshep2023

  • Applications are now open for the 44th CERN School of Computing. The CSC 2023 will take place from 20 August to 2 September in the beautiful city of Tartu, Estonia. The CSC 2023 is aimed at postgraduate (i.e. minimum of Bachelor degree or equivalent) students, engineers and scientists with a few years of experience in particle physics, computing or related fields. We welcome applications from all countries and nationalities.  Limited financial support may be available.  The deadline for applications is 25 April, 2023 – places are limited!  For more details and to apply, please visit  https://indico.cern.ch/e/CSC-2023
