Celebrating Six Years of the CERN Alumni Network: Inspiring Success and the Promise of Third Collisions

Published on June 11, 2023

On 8 June, a joyous celebration unfolded as the CERN Alumni Network commemorated its sixth anniversary. The occasion was marked with an engaging live show streamed from the Neutrino platform, captivating the online audience. Led by Rachel Bray, Head of CERN Alumni Relations, and co-presented by Barbara Binder from CERN's Talent Acquisition team, the show featured remarkable guests and exciting announcements.

The Office for Alumni Relations invited an impressive lineup of guests, including James Purvis, Head of Human Resources at CERN. Alongside Barbara Binder, James provided valuable insights into the student and graduate opportunities available at our renowned laboratory, shedding light on the multitude of paths that can be pursued at CERN. Should any CERN alumni wish to promote such CERN opportunites within their respective networks, do let us know ([email protected]).

Highlighting the power of the CERN experience as a launchpad for extraordinary careers were two exceptional alumni, Dr. Patrick Glauner and Kitty Liao. Dr. Glauner, a renowned full professor in Artificial Intelligence at Deggendorf Institute of Technology, shared how his time at CERN played a pivotal role in shaping his success in the field. Kitty Liao, entrepreneur, captivated the audience with her invention, SMILE, a low-tech and fool-proof vaccine carrier designed to minimise human error and spoilage in vaccine transportation. Their stories served as inspirations, illustrating the transformative impact that CERN can have on one's professional journey.

Adding to the excitement of the live show was the presence of Charlotte Warakaulle, Director for International Relations at CERN. Charlotte shed light on the strategic reasons behind the establishment of the CERN Alumni Network. The network's objectives include maintaining connections with the Organization, among network members and facilitating the exchange of experiences, fostering a vibrant community that transcends time and borders.

Charlotte Warakaulle also made a significant announcement during the live show, unveiling plans for the much-anticipated Third Collisions, an alumni reunion event. Scheduled to take place from 9 to 11 February 2024 at the Science Gateway, CERN's flagship education and outreach facility, this event promises to be a momentous occasion for all CERN alumni. It serves as an opportunity to return, reconnect, and reminisce with other members of the community.

Following on from this announcement, the office for alumni relations eagerly encourages alumni to contribute their ideas and suggestions for the Third Collisions event.  The aim is to ensure that the event caters to the interests and desires of the diverse CERN alumni network, creating an unforgettable experience for all participants. Please share your input of what you would like to experience at Third Collisions.

As the CERN Alumni Network celebrates its sixth anniversary, it stands as a testament to the enduring impact of the laboratory on the lives and careers of its former members. The network has become a dynamic platform, fostering collaboration, knowledge exchange, and lifelong friendships. The upcoming Third Collisions event represents a unique chance for alumni to contribute to the shared legacy of CERN, inspiring future generations.

The CERN Alumni Network eagerly awaits the input and participation of its esteemed alumni, as their valuable contributions will shape the Third Collisions reunion event. This celebration of knowledge, connections, and shared experiences will undoubtedly leave an indelible mark on the CERN alumni community, solidifying CERN's legacy as a beacon of discovery and collaboration.
