Women In Technology - Friday Links - 23/06/2023
Hello everybody,
here is our selection of Friday links.

WIT activities
We have got you covered!
WIT recently distributed little boxes with hygiene products in some toilets all around CERN.
Our idea is to contribute to a feeling of comfort and consideration of those urgent needs.
We are planning on providing the exact locations through CERN’s GIS portal; till then we hope it’s a nice surprise to some of you.
Any feedback, in particular locations you think would profit from this, is welcome!
WIT Talk with the Fermilab Society of Women Engineers: Thursday, June 29 at 16:00 (Zoom only). We will have the opportunity to meet members of fSWE and learn more about their mission, activities, plans. We will also have the chance to discuss possible synergies between fSWE and CERN's WIT.
Workshop, Conferences and Events
Louise and Melania, from the CERN Diversity and Inclusion programme, have shared CERN’s results on the 25 by’25 initiative at the Olympic house in Lausanne! More details on Louise’s post on Linkedin.
A diverse meeting for a diverse fire brigade: on 12 and 13 June, the CERN Fire and Rescue service (CFRS) hosted the 18th meeting of the Commission for Women in Fire and Rescue Services of the CTIF (Comité technique international de prévention et d’extinction de feu), an international association of firefighters.
Digital Accessibility Workshop (organised by IT, FAP, and Web Team): June 26 at 9:30. Aimed at technical and non-technical people alike, we will be looking at the state of play at CERN, what's in the pipeline, and what YOU can do to make your online text and interfaces more accessible in a wider range of situations, as well as for people who use assistive technologies to access information online.
Applications to the Thematic CERN School of Computing on Security 2023 (8-14 October 2023) in Split, Croatia, are open and the deadline is July 23.
The school will focus on the theme of Security of research computing infrastructures. The complete programme will offer around 30 hours of lectures, workshops and hands-on exercises, as well as a student lightning talk session. Classes are prepared and given by speakers who are security professionals with many years of experience in academia and research the following topics:
- Protection and prevention
- Detection
- Respons (Digital forensics, incident response etc)
Articles and links
The other day I was thinking of when by 4 year-old son chose a glittered pink cap from Frozen’s Elsa from a kids clothes store and of when he told me that girls and boys are different but they can play with the same toys and participate in the same activities. Then I started reading about gender awareness and stereotypes and found articles that you might also find interesting. Here they are:
Pattern of gender development is an article published in 2020 that analyses at which age children begin to recognise their own sex and when they might start to develop gender stereotypes.
This is a nice video on how one could fight gender stereotypes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G3Aweo-74kY
A guide on how to challenge stereotypes in the classroom explains that it is important to provide a number of role models and conduct activities that break gender biases.
And a view from the European commission on how breaking gender stereotypes brings out children’s full potential.
Also the United Nations girls’ education initiative talks about this here.
Here is a view on how fashion could help dismantling gender stereotypes.
Greetings,
Adriana
