Women In Technology - Friday Links - 21/07/2023
Hello everyone,
It’s Friday, and that means it’s time for Friday links! This week we bring you a “summery" summary of women’s sports, a key figure in the study of climate change, opportunities to contribute to our social media campaign, and a selection of job postings for those who plan to spend the summer holidays polishing their CVs.
The WIT Communications team is taking a break for the summer holidays, so this will be the last Friday links for a few weeks, but we’ll be back in September, refreshed and ready for more awesome WIT events! If you need to get in touch with us in the meantime, we’ll reply to emails on a best-effort basis.
Have a great summer!
Kate, for WIT SC

Summer sports!
The (men’s) Tour de France recently passed through Ain and Haute-Savoie, and is certainly one of the most famous sporting events in the world… but what about the women’s Tour? This Sunday, July 23, marks the “Grand Départ” of the second edition of the Tour de France Femmes, which finally came into existence in 2022 after several previous attempts to organise a Tour de France for women. These previous attempts suffered from lack of media exposure, funding, prize money, and the belief that women were not capable of handling such a gruelling physical challenge… which could result in “bicycle face”! The Tour de France Femmes is eight days long (vs. three weeks for the men) and has a top prize of 50k EUR (vs 500k for the men), but it is an improvement on the past, so let’s hope the event continues to grow!
- How much time do you have? The untold story of the Tour de France Femmes (Cycling Weekly)
- An absolutely beautiful moment: how the Tour de France Femmes can change women’s cycling (CNN).
For the football fans, the Women’s World Cup runs from July 20 - August 20. This year, the tournament will be hosted by Australia and New Zealand, making it the first edition to be held in the southern hemisphere.
- Worlds apart: Cup’s expansion brings the games of a lifetime (NY Times). Vietnam, one of eight nations playing in their first Women’s World Cup, will face the U.S. this week. Its presence highlights the growth of women’s soccer, but also the challenges that remain.
- This ad featuring the French national team challenges the notion that women’s sports are less exciting or technical than men’s.
Finally, rock climbing!
- Ascend: These women were forced to flee their homes in Afghanistan. Now the climbing community is helping them build a new one.
Eunice Newton Foote / climate crisis
In case you missed the Google doodle earlier this week, July 17 was the 204th anniversary of the birth of Eunice Newton Foote, the first scientist to discover the greenhouse effect and make the connection between increased carbon dioxide levels and the warming of the Earth’s atmosphere.
With heat wave conditions affecting many regions of the planet, let’s take a look at how women are disproportionally affected by the climate crisis.
- Women… in the shadow of climate change (UN Chronicle). "Women are increasingly being seen as more vulnerable than men to the impacts of climate change, mainly because they represent the majority of the world's poor and are proportionally more dependent on threatened natural resources.”
