Hello WIT community!

How is it already November?!  To help you forget all this rain, we’ve got a huge assortment of events to share, including a celebration of Marie Curie’s birthday, a roundtable on paternity leave, LGBTQ+ STEM Day,  forums on gender-based violence, opportunities for students, and a selection of local arts and tech events to liven up these dark and dreary evenings.

Enjoy!

Icelandic women strike for gender equality

On October 24, tens of thousands of Icelandic women, including the Prime Minister, went on strike for gender equality.  "Across the small island nation, schools and libraries were closed or operated on limited hours as female staff stayed home, while hospitals said they would only handle emergency cases.  Joining the protest, Prime Minister Katrin Jakobsdottir, 47, said she would not come to work on Tuesday.”

This is not the first such strike in Iceland; in 1975, 90% of the country’s women went on strike.  The country would go on to become a world leader in progress towards gender equality.

WIT event: paternity leave roundtable: Nov. 7

WIT would like to raise awareness about the need to improve paternity leave conditions. The goal of the roundtable is to learn about paternity leave in the world and at CERN today, listen to four colleagues who will share with us their experiences and choices regarding paternity leave, and open the floor for exchange and discussion with our community.

Join us for what promises to be an interesting discussion in the IT Amphitheatre on Tuesday, Nov. 7 at 12:15, followed by lunch in R2: https://indico.cern.ch/event/1299527/

WIT event: Marie Curie movie screening: Nov. 20

Marie Curie was born in November (Nov. 7, 1867, to be precise).  To celebrate her birthday, WIT is organising a special screening of the movie “Radioactive”, based on the graphic novel by Lauren Redniss, and starring Rosamund Pike as Marie Curie.   Join us in the Council Chamber on Monday, Nov. 20 at 19:00:  https://indico.cern.ch/event/1335111/.

While you’re making your popcorn, read Marie Curie’s Passion (Smithsonian Magazine). "Curie worked during a great age of innovation, but proper women of her time were thought to be too sentimental to perform objective science. She would forever be considered a bit strange, not just a great scientist but a great woman scientist. “

CERN observes LGBTQ+ in STEM Day: Nov. 17

For the first time ever, CERN will be raising the Pride flag in honour of LGBTQ+ STEM day, on Friday, Nov. 17 at 13:00 on the Esplanade des Particules.  More details at: https://indico.cern.ch/event/1341756/

International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women: Nov. 25

To raise awareness of gender-based violence , the Collectif féministes de Meyrin is organising a series of events:

Cette année, des femmes de Meyrin se mobilisent et proposent deux rencontres thématisant les violences sexuelles et sexistes (VSS).  For more information and to register, contact [email protected].

Boissons offertes.
