Name: Andy Paulo Ramirez Urena
At CERN: 2022: Summer Student, IT Department
Today: Technical Support Engineer

As part of the 2024 Non-member States summer students programme (NMSSS), the CERN & Society Foundation and the CERN Alumni Relations team have joined forces to mobilise resources and energies for the project. Every year, the CERN & Society Foundation allows around 30 students to spend up to 8 weeks at CERN and work on an advanced technical project in an experimental or engineering team.

We are delighted to introduce you to Andy, an electronics and communications engineer from the Dominican Republic, whose passion for science and technology led him to a life-changing experience as a summer student at CERN. In this article, we'll delve into Andy's transformative journey, exploring the profound impact of his time at CERN and how it served as a catalyst for his blossoming career.

Celebrating Diversity and Building Global Connections

For Andy, participating in the CERN Summer Student Programme was not just a prestigious achievement; it was a realisation of a dream rooted in a deep love for mathematics and physics. Overcoming his initial hesitations, he applied and was selected, becoming the first Dominican participant in the programme.

Reflecting on his first impressions, Andy described the sense of community and diversity at CERN as awe-inspiring: “One memorable moment that stood out for me was when I had the chance to draw and proudly wear the Dominican Republic flag on my chest during the welcome session for all students. Amidst diverse participants, including the first Dominican in the programme, I realised we were all newcomers in the scientific community. Being part of a diverse group from Nigeria, Sri Lanka, Macedonia, and beyond expanded my worldview through interactions and shared experiences."

Andy's Summer Student Experience Filled with Particle Physics Insights and Skill Development

Andy's summer at CERN was marked by a myriad of experiences – from research projects and hands-on workshops to high-level lectures. Engaging with experts in various fields, he developed a passion for particle physics, expanding his interests and skills. The lectures including the creation of a Cloud Chamber and programming with Python, provided a diverse learning environment.
One of the highlights for Andy was the opportunity to meet and express gratitude to his sponsors, a moment that made him contemplate giving back in the future. His involvement in the programme not only enriched his technical skills but also enhanced his soft skills, communication, and proactive approach.

Post-CERN Journey

Now based in the Dominican Republic, Andy works remotely for Thryv in the United States as a technical support analyst, exploring a potential shift towards software development and DevOps. Reflecting on the challenges faced by young graduates, he emphasised how his CERN internship opened doors for him, giving him a competitive edge in the job market.

And what would he say to other aspiring students?
"I'd say, take on challenges even if they seem bigger than you, give it a try, and go for it. It doesn't matter where you come from or the size of your country. Recruiters will make sure that if you're the perfect fit for the project, you'll be selected. So, don't stress, give it a try, and dive in."

CERN & Society Foundation: Enabling Transformative Opportunities for Students Worldwide

The Foundation's fundraising efforts make it possible for individuals like Andy to participate in these transformative programmes, showcasing the global impact of CERN's initiatives.
"I wish to express my sincere appreciation to the CERN & Society Foundation for their impactful work. Through their fundraising efforts, they extend opportunities for students worldwide to experience CERN, playing a crucial role, particularly for those from underrepresented countries."

Andy's journey from the Dominican Republic to CERN exemplifies the transformative power of international collaboration in science and technology. His story stands as a testament to the opportunities provided by the CERN summer student programme and the invaluable role played by the CERN & Society Foundation in fostering diversity and inclusion in scientific endeavours.

As Andy continues to chart his course, the impact of his CERN experience resonates, proving that a summer at CERN is not just an experience—it's a launchpad for a promising career.
