Third Collisions Panel: Exploring the Convergence of Physics and Pharma

Published on January 19, 2024

In the upcoming CERN Alumni Third Collisions event, a panel featuring two esteemed CERN alumni, Zoe Lawson and Jeffrey Reid, will delve into the convergence of physics and healthcare. With a focus on the pharmaceutical industry, the discussion promises to cover a spectrum of innovative topics, from pharma manufacturing and genetic medicine to the dynamics between traditional pharmaceutical players and emerging actors.

Meet the panellists:

Zoe Lawson, currently a senior scientist at Johnson & Johnson in Switzerland specialising in large molecule drug production, brings a wealth of experience to the table. Having spent five years at CERN until 2017, Zoe contributed significantly to the Knowledge Transfer team, specialising in the application of CERN technologies to life and chemical sciences. Her expertise spans diverse roles in postdoctoral and tech innovation capacities across various countries, providing a global perspective on the evolving landscape of pharmaceuticals.

Jeffrey Reid, Chief Data Officer at the Regeneron Genetics Center, stands as a visionary in the field of precision medicine. With a background in physics and a Ph.D. from the University of Washington, Jeffrey has been a driving force in applying computational analysis tools to large genomic datasets, with a focus on integrating electronic health records for transformative insights into drug discovery and patient outcomes.

The panel discussion is set to cover a myriad of relevant topics, including bringing innovation into pharmaceutical manufacturing, exciting developments in genetic medicine, and an exploration of the dynamics between traditional pharmaceutical entities and new actors in the field. Attendees can expect to gain valuable insights into trends, challenges, and future prospects within the pharmaceutical industry, guided by the diverse experiences and perspectives of these accomplished CERN alumni panellists.

As the conversation unfolds, the panellists will share their thoughts on the dynamic interplay between physics and pharmaceuticals, offering a unique perspective on how skills honed at CERN can shape the future of healthcare
