WIT activities
- If you haven’t done so yet, please take note of our upcoming WIT annual review, on Thursday, February 1 at 12:00. https://indico.cern.ch/event/1366692/. If your New Year’s resolution is to get more involved, this is a great opportunity to learn more about WIT and the volunteer opportunities that we offer, and to provide feedback on our activities. We have also created a brief survey, which we invite you to complete here: https://forms.office.com/e/Qnzqjgc0B6. This survey is anonymous; although you must log in with your CERN account, this will not be associated with your response. Please reply to the survey no later than Friday, January 26 so that we can use your feedback as input to the annual review.
- The cake sale will take place on Tuesday 6th February from 12h to 14h in R2. WIT is happy to announce a cake sale to celebrate 11th of February, the International day of Women and Girls in Science. We would like to celebrate this day by helping raising funds for the Aid For All charitable association led by our colleague Connie Potter. Among many projects, Aid For All is supporting the Jhalak school in Kalkotta, offering classes in the morning before school, as well as a hot breakfast and after school computing classes to ~100 very poor children. To know more about Aid For All, please check: https://www.aidforall.ch/
- Workshop on 9 February from 17:00 to 21:00 where we will introduce impostor syndrome, including what it is and how it usually manifests. After an introductory talk, participants will split in small groups to do some hands-on exercises. The workshop is moderated by a group of senior colleagues who know the career impact that impostor syndrome may have and are willing to provide you with a safe space to share some experiences and learned lessons, as well as helping you to build a support network of colleagues. All the details can be found in Indico: https://indico.cern.ch/event/1328290/ There are a few places left. If you can’t come in the end, please, let us know so we can free your place for someone else.

- The gender gap in STEM : still gaping in 2023: https://professionalprograms.mit.edu/blog/leadership/the-gender-gap-in-stem/
The article discusses the persistent underrepresentation of women in STEM fields, noting that women constitute only 28% of the STEM workforce. Key factors contributing to this gap include stereotypes, lack of female role models, unconscious bias, and work-life balance challenges. The article suggests strategies like encouraging girls in STEM education, creating inclusive workplaces, promoting female role models, and addressing structural barriers like pay and funding bias. It highlights the benefits of gender diversity in STEM for innovation, economic growth, and social progress, emphasizing the need for a multifaceted approach to close the gender gap
