A Collision of Alumni Communities: CERN and DESY Alumni Offices Forge Connections

Published on March 17, 2024

Thursday, 14 March 2024, members of the CERN Office for Alumni Relations had an illuminating exchange with Katya Kroschewski, the Head of Relation Management & Digital Organization at DESY. Our exchange centred on experience sharing, devising strategies,  the advantages and obstacles of setting up an alumni network for Organizations such as CERN or DESY, as well as the various tools available for this purpose.

Alumni networks serve as invaluable conduits for fostering connections that transcend time and physical distance. They are vibrant communities where former colleagues can continue to engage, share insights, and cultivate new opportunities. In our discussion with Katya Kroschewski, we delved into the multiple benefits that alumni networks offer to both Organizations and their members. For CERN and DESY, these networks provide pathways for ongoing professional development, idea exchange, and an opportunity to engage . They also offer a means for alumni to stay abreast of the latest advancements in their fields and to access exclusive events and resources. Furthermore, they offer avenues for networking with like-minded professionals, accessing career opportunities, and staying connected with the pioneering research happening within their respective Organizations. Additionally, alumni networks often facilitate mentorship opportunities, where seasoned professionals can guide and inspire those from the next generation.

Naturally, establishing and nurturing such networks comes with its own set of challenges. From ensuring active engagement to organising compelling events, there is a need for thoughtful planning and dedicated effort. Nevertheless, the rewards far outweigh the challenges, as evidenced by the rich interactions and collaborations that often emerge from these alumni communities.

During our meeting with Katya Kroschewski, ideas were exchanged on how CERN Alumni and DESY Connect could collaborate to enhance the experiences of their respective alumni members. This collaborative spirit opens doors to joint events, shared resources, and innovative initiatives that benefit all involved. One notable example of this collaboration was the joint event organised with DESY COAST, titled "Meet a Role Model." This event not only showcased the accomplishments of CERN and DESY alumni but also provided a platform for networking and inspiration.

For those who have had the privilege of working at DESY, Katya extends a warm invitation to join DESY Connect. This online platform serves as a gateway to a dynamic community of alumni, offering unparalleled opportunities for networking and collaboration, ensuring that DESY CONNECT members remain part of the DESY family — no matter where they are in the world.
