Running Across the Globe: The CERN Alumni Virtual Relay Race

On Thursday 30 May, the CERN community came together to run the annual CERN relay race. And over the month of May, alumni from across the globe have been invited to take part, virutally. 

For the third year running, the CERN alumni virtual relay race brought participants together from 26 countries, including Austria, Azerbaijan, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Iran, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom and the United States. 

This year saw a record number of 14 teams competing, each made up of 6 members, with names that were as creative as they were inspiring such as the Boson Blazers, Lepton Locomotives, the Infamous Turtles and Tortoise and Hare. 

Their mission? Each member had to run one of the following distances 400m, 600m, 600m, 800m, 800m and 1000 metres to achieve the best possible time. They recorded their respective times on a running app and shared their results and a photo with the office for alumni relations and the CERN running club who provided the final ranking (see below). 

A huge well done to all the teams and especially the team “Medaustron”, who impressed us this year with their performances that enabled them to win the CERN Alumni Virtual Relay Race 2024 for the second consecutive year!

None of this would have been possible without the support of the CERN Running Club, which enabled us to experience this fabulous adventure with CERN Alumni, while connecting with the world.
