WIT maternity leave roundtable

Thank you for joining us on Tuesday for the Maternity Leave Roundtable. Special thanks go to our speakers for their openness in sharing their personal experiences, which allowed everyone to relate and understand their circumstances, as well as for explaining the system at CERN. We also appreciate all those who actively participated in the constructive Q&A session. For those who were unable to attend, we have uploaded the recording of the session to the Indico link for the event: https://indico.cern.ch/event/1416659/

We are grateful to everyone in the WIT community for your continued engagement in our activities.  See you next time!

If you’d like to know more about maternity and parental leave, here are a few resources:

  • Is the maternal wall causing a critical leak in the STEM pipeline? "The career paths of women and men diverge in opposite directions soon after having children, with fathers being unaffected or receiving a career boost, while mothers may move to part-time employment, change career path, stay in a lower-responsibility role, or exit the labour force altogether."

  • Paid parental leave: big differences for mothers and fathers.  "Paid parental leave is often a family-based entitlement that mothers and fathers can share, but it is mostly used by mothers. This is related to the traditional gender roles surrounding childcare and unpaid work, but it is also motivated by financial factors as fathers often earn more than their partners, meaning household income suffers more if they use the leave entitlement.”

WIT job shadowing: a success story!

We recently heard from Gabrielle, a student who participated in job shadowing at CERN last summer.  She got in touch with us to share an update which warmed our hearts! :)   Gabrielle and her friends coded an app to help reduce food waste, and it won first place and $10000 at the National Geographic Slingshot Challenge competition!  You can watch a video about the app here.

Gabrielle told us, "Thank you so much for having me last summer and introducing me to how your job works, other female engineers and scientists at CERN, it was so nice and I was really inspired.”

We are thrilled for Gabrielle and we’re very grateful to everyone who volunteered their time to mentor her!

Mentoring plays a crucial role in personal and professional development, providing support and knowledge transfer between experienced mentors and people seeking to grow. Establishing a mentor-mentee relationship requires a shared understanding of the principles of mentoring and a solid foundation of trust and communication.
