Picture this! CERN Alumni Share their Iconic Snapshots.

Published on October 12, 2024

To celebrate CERN70, we asked you to share a piece of your CERN experience through a photograph—your favourite CERN-themed photo, or even the very first photo you took at CERN. Your response was truly overwhelming! Over the past few weeks, we’ve had the pleasure of showcasing some incredible images, posted by you on the alumni.cern Live Feed:  https://alumni.cern/feed,  each capturing unique aspects of CERN life: from its iconic buildings and impressive technological feats to the strong sense of connection that many of you hold with CERN.

Your photos didn’t just capture moments; they captured memories, stories, and the spirit of discovery that permeates the CERN community. Selecting the winning photos was no easy feat for the Office for Alumni Relations, so we’ve turned to the community to decide the top three. The most "liked" photos, selected by you, are:

Sunrise at CERN by Sitong An

The Globe of Science and Innovation seen through a CERN window by Richa Nevatia
Richa remarks, "The favorite photo I took as my contract ended at CERN!"

R1 Pyramid by Inaki Ortega Ruiz
Inaki comments, "It was taken in September 2012, a few months after I first arrived at CERN. We found this outside R1 and for me was a perfect example of how amazing CERN can be, the incredible people it attracts, and the good sense of humor we have. To paraphrase Sheldon Cooper: 'When you understand the laws of physics, Penny, anything is possible.'"

The collection of photos you've shared is as diverse as the CERN experience itself. To celebrate your contributions, we’ve put together two photo montages that showcase a selection of these images. They capture the essence of CERN—from the pioneering technology developed here to the iconic structures that define our landscape and the connections we hold dear.

The montages feature photos that reflect not only CERN’s technological achievements but also the camaraderie, collaboration, and creativity that make our community so unique. Every image represents a cherished memory and offers a glimpse into the rich experiences that CERN alumni carry with them, no matter where they are in the world.

As a small token of our appreciation, all contributors will receive a thank-you gift from the Office for Alumni Relations. Your photos have contributed to a tapestry of memories that speaks to the ongoing story of CERN and the legacy we are building together.

Once again, we extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who participated. Each photo shared is a reminder of the impact CERN has had on us all and the bonds that tie us together. Here’s to more memories, more photos, and more moments that celebrate the unique spirit of the CERN alumni community!
