Women In Technology - Friday Links - 15/11/2024
Published on November 15, 2024
Hello everyone,
It’s once again time for the Friday links! This week we bring you some climate-related news, inspirational stories of women who defy stereotypes, a new opportunity for volunteers, and a wide selection of interesting events, both at CERN and in the wider community. Enjoy!
Kate, for WIT SC
Climate crisis: COP29 and Geneva Climate Week
The COP29 UN Climate Change Conference is currently taking place.
- Gender and women at COP29. Watch a recording of the information session on climate and gender, and learn more about the impact of climate change on gender inequality.
More than 50 free events with numerous partners will be on the program in different locations: debates, workshops and even film screenings will allow citizens to better understand climate issues and the solutions available to them to reduce their carbon footprint.
And here are a few climate-related items from the CERN community:
- Nanna Debois Buhl’s Atmospheric Omens: artistic speculations on climate futures. Merging weaving and generative algorithms, Debois Buhl’s new installation draws on CERN’s CLOUD Experiment and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein as a framework for envisioning Earth’s climate futures through an artistic lens. (You might recall meeting Nanna at one of our recent WIT lunches!)
- CERN mobility survey (deadline: Dec. 6). Please take 1 minute of your time to complete the survey: 7 quick questions to help continuous improvement of CERN’s mobility infrastructure and calculate associated emissions for the next Environment Report.
Weekend reads
To counteract the emotionally draining stories in the news these days, here are a few stories of groundbreaking women who defy stereotypes.
UK exhibition shows 15th-century women led armies and performed surgery. The British Library illuminates the life of women in the middle ages, revealing an often overlooked detail – their agency.
Bubbly personalities: meet particle physics’ ‘scanning girls’. Long before sophisticated electronic detectors were available to physicists, they had to track the movements of particles by using more analogue methods. One of these was the ‘cloud chamber’ that you’re probably familiar with. Another was the ‘bubble chamber’ — this is the story of the bubble chamber and the remarkable women employed as ‘scanning girls’ to plot the particle’s movements.
'Strong, capable Hutterite runner' takes on the trail — and tradition. Elaine Hofer is a Hutterite and a runner, but it's not always easy being both.
✨ Volunteer Opportunity Alert! ✨
We're looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help us bring the Mentoring@CERN program to life in two unique ways:
- Web Development - Help us build a simple, static webpage for Mentoring@CERN as it continues to grow post-pilot phase! We’ll provide all text content, and you’ll bring it to life with your skills. If creating from scratch excites you, we'd love your support!
- Logo Design - Are you a creative mind with a flair for design? We’d like to bring the WIT and LHC ECS logos together and add a meaningful mentoring element to create a unique design. Submit your design ideas by the end of November – we’d love to see what you come up with!
Interested? Please reach out to become part of this impactful project at [email protected].

Eument-net Expert Exchange: Mentoring helps navigating fast-paced science (December 3, online event), with Anne Bercht and Ruth Kamm. Many researchers in untenured academic positions experience the tension between the drive for rapid, high-volume publishing and the need for thoughtful, in-depth research. In this talk we will discuss ways to support an academic culture that challenges the prevailing “publish-or-perish” paradigm and to foster a more welcoming and productive environment for researchers. Please register to participate for free by Nov. 29.
