Weekly News: Particle physics preventing fraud and treating cardiac pathology

In this week's digest we had two terrific examples of how particle physics technologies have an impact on other fields of industry.

For instance, do you know what the billions of particle collisions in the LHC and high-speed trading on commodity futures markets have in common? They both use advanced data analytics, either to track the collisions in the LHC or to help protect commodity and financial markets from fraud. The practical application of particle physics technologies does not stop at the financial sector. At the beginning of this year, for the first time in the world, a patient with entricular arrhythmia was successfully treated with proton beams with a cancer therapy synchrotron that CERN helped to establish at the CNAO (Pavia, Italy) .
