This week marks the start of our countdown to the CERN Alumni Network’s 8th anniversary, coming up on 8 June. With nearly 11,000 members worldwide, the network has grown into a thriving global community. As we celebrate this milestone, we’d love to hear from you: what’s been your highlight so far? Has the network helped you in your career, introduced you to new people, or simply made you feel more connected to CERN? Share your thoughts and help shape the future of the network here: https://alumni.cern/news/2660960.

Did you know that one of the benefits of being a member of the CERN Alumni Network is the possibility to come back on site? In our fourth “Look Who We Bumped Into” video, Trisha and Nicola share what it was like to come back and revisit the place that shaped so much of their professional journey: https://alumni.cern/news/2661030.

CERN alumnus Antoni Shtipliyski offers valuable insights for early-career researchers interested in transitioning to machine-learning roles in industry in this CERN Courier article: https://cerncourier.com/a/machine-learning-in-industry/, and watch his presentation from our “Moving Out of Academia” to Machine Learning event here: https://youtu.be/8mxyOKNaQKs.

Several regional group events are just around the corner. If you're based nearby, join us for the following:

On 27 May, the second IUPAP/UNESCO International Colloquium on “Physics for Society” will explore “Illuminating Innovation: Synchrotron Science, Quantum Frontiers, and Africa’s Scientific Future.” This online session will feature a forward-looking discussion on research, global equity, and opportunities for the future: https://alumni.cern/events/181531.

ALICE has observed the conversion of lead into gold during near-miss collisions between lead nuclei at the LHC. The findings mark a fascinating milestone in understanding nuclear interactions under extreme conditions: https://home.cern/news/news/physics/alice-detects-conversion-lead-gold-lhc.

Finally, Chile will officially become an Associate Member State of CERN. On 16 May, CERN Director-General Fabiola Gianotti and Chile’s Minister of Science, Technology, Knowledge and Innovation signed the agreement, further strengthening ties between CERN and the Latin American scientific community: https://home.cern/news/press-release/cern/chile-become-associate-member-state-cern.
