🔭 Honouring Pioneering Women in Space & Science
UK’s First Professional Female Astronomer
Annie Walker began working at the Cambridge Observatory at just 15 years old in 1879. Now recognised as the UK’s first professional female astronomer, she contributed thousands of stellar observations and even had an asteroid named after her! Cambridge’s Institute of Astronomy is now working to uncover her photograph and celebrate her trailblazing legacy. Read more here.
Nichelle Nichols Space Camp for Teen Girls (USA, 2026)
A new space camp for girls will open in January 2026 in honour of Nichelle Nichols, beloved as Lt. Uhura in Star Trek and remembered for her impactful work with NASA to promote diversity in space exploration. Read more here.
Professor Maria Teresa Dova awarded 2025 l’Oréal-UNESCO for Women in Science International Awards
Professor Dova has been recognised for her groundbreaking contributions to high-energy physics, including the discovery of the Higgs boson and the study of cosmic rays. Her mentorship and leadership have inspired a generation of scientists and elevated Argentina’s role in global experimental physics. Read more here.
