Hello everybody,

here is our selection of Friday links!

I hope you will find them interesting!

First of all, please do not forget the WIT Community Annual Review + Activity Survey.

Share your opinion of WIT activities with us by completing the following survey: https://cda-surveys.web.cern.ch/form/wit-community-survey-2022

Join us for a review of the activities organised by the WIT Community during 2021, and learn more about our plans for 2022. March 7 12:30 – 13:30 CET: https://indico.cern.ch/event/1122824/

One week ago we celebrated the International Day of Women and Girls in STEM. We have happily seen that many communities at CERN and outside CERN have engaged in the celebration of this day and you will find one example below.

The EIROForum Diversity Working Group has invited children to make drawings, representing each organisation, with the theme “Women in Science”. One drawing per organisation has been selected to form part of this beautiful collage:  11 Feb EIROForum drawing collage
In particular, the wonderful CERN drawing is by 11 year old Camilla Both, daughter of HR Legal Adviser Kathinka Hewitt. Camilla’s is the one on the top row: the woman observing the galaxy at night.

#NoMoreMatildas is a campaign of AMIT (Association of Women Researchers and Technologists) that intends to denounce the consequences of the Matilda Effect (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matilda_effect). An idea of Gettingbetter with the collaboration of Dospassos that aims to recover scientific role models to arouse interest in science. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGiyCl8aZW0

“Smithsonian to show 120 orange statues of female scientists” https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/smithsonian-to-show-120-orange-statues-of-female-scientists/2022/02/11/1c884cf6-8b5d-11ec-838f-0cfdf69cce3c_story.html

The BBC has prepared the list of 100 inspiring and influential women from around the world in 2021.

We are happy to see that 22 of them are involved in Science and Health.

We are convinced that women are as inspiring and as influential as men but there is still a lot of work to do. A new study published on Health Affair in December 2021 shows that Female Physicians Earn An Estimated $2 Million Less Than Male Physicians Over A Simulated 40-Year Career https://www.healthaffairs.org/doi/abs/10.1377/hlthaff.2021.00461?utm_medium=press&utm_source=mediaadvisory&utm_campaign=december2021issue&utm_content=whaley

Gender neutral language is always a hot topic to talk about.
While there are countries in which steps forward are taken to ensure gender neutral language, like Norway, that is planning to introduce a gender neutral pronoun in the dictionary https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/feb/02/new-gender-neutral-pronoun-norwegian-dictionaries-hen-official-language

there are still others (like France) in which the idea faces opposition (luckily not from everyone)

We conclude on a topic that makes us all very sad.

6th of February is marked as the International day of Zero Tolerance for Female Mutilation

Two new tools have been launched by WHO and HRP to help healthcare providers give the best quality care to girls and women who have been subjected to FGM – and to also support global efforts to end this harmful practice and human rights violation.

And finally, do you think that finding women in technology should be this hard?

We wish you a super fun weekend!
