Celebrating the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace
On April 6, we celebrate the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP), which presents an opportunity to recognise the positive role sport and physical activity play in communities and in people’s lives across the globe.
Many of you will have taken part in the multiple activities organised by (the just under 50) CERN clubs whilst working at the Lab; perhaps you discovered a passion for winter sports, you grappled with the rules of cricket or you took part in the annual CERN relay race. Not only does taking part in sport improve ones general health and wellbeing but it also enhances non-professional relations between members and facilitates integration. Did you know that even after leaving the Organization, CERN Clubs keep their doors open for CERN alumni?
The International Day of Sport for Development and Peace is a great opportunity to congratulate the CERN football club team for their victory in the Geneva Corporations football league (AGFC). This competitive league has brought together teams from major companies in the Geneva area with a spirit of competition and respect since 1925. CERN has a long history of competing in the league, but this is their first championship in more than a decade. In their path to the championship, the CERN team defeated teams from Rolex, Migros, and Procter and Gamble. The CERN team reflects the diversity and spirit of CERN, bringing together 23 men and women of diverse ages and nationalities and also includes members of the CERN Alumni Network! This group showed that not only can they perform at a high level professionally in their work, they are top sportspeople and competitors. Congratulations to the whole team!
Why not share your sporting achievements with the community by posting your pictures at the end of this article in the comments field? Perhaps you have continued with an activity you first encountered at CERN, maybe you've recently discovered a new activity, why not tell us about it?
