Hi everybody,
We are back after some holidays with our compilation for the weekend.
[Exclamation Points!?]

Women, power and exclamation points

The problem with telling women how to email
Ultimately, real empowerment would be not having to think about how we come across at all. Needless to say, there are conspicuously few think pieces out there about how men should email.

Today I am formally renouncing my use of exclamation points. Actually what I’m renouncing is the idea that all my exclamation points are genuine, but we’ll get to that part..

CERN has a job shadowing program to help school children confirm the choice of their future studies through discovering CERN and how it is pushing the frontiers of science and technology.
The shadowing lasts typically one week during the summer.
We are in contact with HR that mentions that often times children are excluded from the program because of lack of volunteers to be shadowed so we need the WIT community to:
- Volunteer to be shadowed; it will also be a rewarding for you! Please mail us if you are interested: [email protected]
- Drum-up interest in the young girls around you; this is a chance we have to change the current gender balance in the early interest in STEM careers. Applications are open: https://careers.cern/job-shadowing
The power of a role model
Often we think of quite a distance, I guess, between us and role models and us and mentors. [..] role modeling can happen anywhere.
Everyone’s got that sphere of influence. You don’t have to be the big C-suite or the big exec. I know a lot of these are, but there’s a lot of role modeling that can happen that doesn’t have to be all about traditional hierarchies or status and titles that people have gained or have earned.

I can absolutely say, no, I wasn’t always looking at diversity and inclusion,” he said. “And that isn’t a bad intention, but you pick the people you know around you.”

[For the parents among us]
Raising feminist sons seemed easy. A daughter? Much trickier.
I hope I have modeled one lesson for my daughter: It’s never too late to do better. Maybe one day I’ll grow up to be like her.
