Summer Students: where are they now? The story of Larissa Mendes
Larissa Mendes, 2019 Summer Student now working as an X-Ray Detector Analyst, shares her journey after CERN and how the Summer Student programme helped her subsequent career.
"Based on my experience with particle detectors acquired before and during the summer school, I got a job offer a couple of months after returning to my home country. Today I am an X-Ray Detector Analyst in a company that builds large area photon-counting detectors for synchrotron beamlines. I've had great experiences participating in the commissioning of Sirius, the new Brazilian synchrotron light source, and the largest and most complex research infrastructure ever built in Brazil.
In the meantime, I'm also pursuing my master's thesis in physics at the State University of Campinas (São Paulo, Brazil). In partnership with the DESY-ATLAS group, I work with 3D device simulations with Sentaurus TCAD and Monte Carlo simulations to understand the performance parameters of 65 nm CMOS imaging technology to develop the next generation of pixel sensors.
I'm pretty sure my experience at CERN played a big role in every opportunity that I had. Even if indirectly."
