Women In Technology - Friday Links - 23/09/2022

Published on September 23, 2022

Dear WIT Friends,

these are our selection of Friday links:

Parental leave:

It is one of the most important topics of our generation since more and more women are able to work nowadays. The importance of the early years of parent-child bonding is significant and parenthood should be promoted, not blocked.

Here you can find the map on length of maternity leave in 167 countries by ILO.

4 Countries with the Best Parental Leave Laws: Germany, Finland, Iceland, Norway

Hidden Figures:

For many decades, women were hidden figures. They offered so much in science but due to gender discrimination they didn't receive any credit for it.
Some of them were lucky enough to be recognized at a very old age and some of them afterlife. But probably there are many that we will never learn about them..

One of my favorite movies that mentions the 3 following strong women who fought for their rights in a men's world at NASA is "Hidden Figures":

Katherine G. Johnson
Mary W. Jackson
Dorothy Vaughan

Find more information about the scientists here

Another very important "hidden" woman was Donna DeEtte Elbert who with her work helped her boss to win the Nobel Prize.

Equal Pay Day:

18th of September: International Equal Pay Day

Unfortunately, 2022 and we are still talking about gender pay inequality !

Gender pay gap still exists in all fields, even in the shiny Hollywood world :

Jennifer Lawrence discusses gender pay gap after earning ‘$5m less’ than Leonardo DiCaprio for Don’t Look Up

Job Shadowing:

Due to job shadowing program that it is currently in place at CERN, high school students have the opportunity to visit CERN and learn more about how people within the organization work. I personally had the chance to share this great experience with a student from UK who spent her week with us, Annabelle Gill. Annabelle created a report explaining her experience at CERN and she kindly shared it with us. I really hope we met her expectations and she will join STEM in the future because we need her!
