Women In Technology - Friday Links - 09/12/2022
Dear WIT Friends,
these are our selection of Friday links:
International Volunteer Day:

These crazy days we live in, helping each other is crucial. Things that for some of us are for granted, for others are luxury such as free education, health, etc.
On the 5th of December, we celebrated the International Volunteer Day, which reminds us of the importance of our contribution to the world.
As a big volunteering supporter, I have found during the last years many organizations that have different volunteering programs in place in order to empower women and to advance gender equality around the world.
Women Empowerment Volunteer Abroad Programs
Promoting gender equality through volunteering: a new interactive toolkit for policymakers
UNICEF Volunteers advancing gender equality
But what the statistics tells us about volunteering and gender equality? Are the numbers, the age and the type of work the same around the world? Is the recognition the same?
Beyond averages: do gender disparities exist in volunteering?
However, do women volunteer more than men? Are these tasks help them get promoted?
Studies the last decades try to understand if women are held back in job promotions due to low-status task such as volunteering.
Women more often volunteer for tasks that hinder their promotability
Saying ‘no’ in science isn’t enough
Travelling Solo:
'In 2017, Cassie De Pecol fulfilled her lifelong dream of traveling to every country in the world, breaking two Guinness World Records, and gaining recognition in the National Woman’s History Museum, becoming the first woman on human record to travel every country in the world. '
She is sharing with us her experiences and her tips for safe solo travel around the world:
But is it safe for women to travel alone?
Unfortunately, it is not fully safe yet for women to travel in specific places even if it has been improved a lot the last years due to technology, but safety starts with the right mindset, so here are some tips shared by women's personal experiences.
News:
- Annie Ernaux delivered her Nobel Prize lecture in literature on 7 December 2022: https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/literature/2022/ernaux/lecture/
Call for volunteers:
Last chance to join the ranks of the ambassadors for Women and Girls in Science and Technology!
