Remembering Mick Storr

Published on June 14, 2026

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Mick Storr on 7 June 2025. Over nearly five decades of association with CERN, Mick became known not only for his contributions to particle physics, but also for his remarkable gift for engaging and inspiring people through science.

At CERN Alumni Relations, we will remember Mick as a valued friend of the alumni community. He was always delighted to help guide alumni visits to the Laboratory, bringing CERN to life through his stories, humour and deep knowledge. His warmth, generosity and enthusiasm made every visit memorable and left a lasting impression on those fortunate enough to spend time with him.

The following message, prepared by Mick's daughters, reflects on his life and legacy and provides information for those wishing to pay their respects.

Many of you will have known Mick through his long association with CERN and the particle physics community. He joined CERN on 6 October 1975 and dedicated much of his career to science, education, and inspiring others. While he was an accomplished physicist, he will perhaps be remembered most for his extraordinary ability to communicate science, particularly through CERN's Teacher Programmes, where he welcomed and inspired thousands of teachers from around the world.

In the days since his passing, many have shared memories of his lectures, stories, humour, hospitality, and his unwavering commitment to helping others understand and appreciate what science can achieve.

His impact extended far beyond the laboratory and will continue to be felt through the many people he inspired throughout his career.

For those who would like to attend, the funeral will take place on:

Thursday 18 June at 11:00am
Location: Chapelle Camoletti, Cimetière de Saint-Georges, Route de Saint-Georges 96, 1213 Petit-Lancy, Switzerland

This will be followed by a “pot de l’amitié” (social gathering) at Café de la Tour.

There will also be a live stream, details will be shared shortly.

Thank you to everyone who has shared memories, kind words, and support during this difficult time. It has been a comfort to learn just how many lives Mick touched throughout his remarkable career. As Mick often said: "At CERN, we never say goodbye, we only say au revoir."
