Women In Technology - Friday Links - 28/04/2023
Hello everybody,
Here is our selection of Friday links!
We hope you will find them interesting!
👩💻 Last week on Friday and Saturday we had a great event: The Django Girls
https://djangogirls.org/geneva5/
The Django Girls workshop offers a crash course in computer programming for beginners aged 15 and over. The aim is to introduce digital technologies to the uninitiated, especially women, who are underrepresented in this field. In a supportive and positive environment, the participants are coached by the CERN tutors in how to create a blog and launch it online. The event takes place in person, in French and English, at IdeaSquare.
One of the tutors, Brunella D’Anzi, shares her feelings with the WIT-FL readers:
I was really glad to see that in less than two days many motivated girls were able to become confident in thinking as programmers and writing customized lines of code to produce wonderful websites, I am really impressed and proud of them!
And here are some photos from the event.

Some articles and readings
📃Article: Women catch up with men in stem
https://www.nationalreview.com/corner/women-catch-up-with-men-in-stem/
Scientists built huge, powerful machines, even bombs; they eradicated diseases, deciphered DNA, and landed on the moon. Women just didn’t fit into this vision; even when they made crucial advances, men ran the show and took the credit. … But there’s good news: It’s taken a while to get there, but according to a newly published study, women scientists are now at or very close to parity in hiring, promotion, and pay, and even outdistance men in some areas.
📃Article: Fostering gender equality: How we help women succeed in STEM
https://www.undp.org/ukraine/blog/fostering-gender-equality-how-we-help-women-succeed-stem
It takes courage and sufficient self-confidence for women to resist such gender stereotypes in society and master a profession that is considered “masculine,” the respondents in the study told researchers. Even girls who are good at mathematical subjects at school often hesitate to go to universities to pursue a technical education. Without role models, support, and mentors, it is difficult for them to venture into a male-dominated field.
📃Article: Why peer Mentors Are Crucial for Women in STEM

I am proud to be part of a world where we strive for equal representation. I often think of Jocelyn Bell Burnell, who discovered the first neutron star—although her male adviser received the Nobel Prize for doing so.
📃Article: Resources for Women in Computer Technology
On the suggestion of Billy Adams, Thanks.
https://www.purdueglobal.edu/blog/information-technology/resources-women-computer-technology/
“Working women have had an interesting relationship with careers in computer science (CS) and information technology (IT) over the last 50 years. The field was dominated by men; then from the 1970s to the mid-1980s, there was a steady increase in women in computing, then a leveling off, and then a decline, according to NPR."
