Beyond Science: CERN Alumni show their sporting talents in the Virtual Relay Race 2023

Published on June 1, 2023

CERN alumni continue to prove that they excel not only in the realms of physics, engineering, and technology but also in the pursuit of physical challenges. This was evident in the second virtual edition of the CERN Relay Race - a thrilling competition that marked its 51st year!

For those unfamiliar with the CERN Relay Race, it consists of six stages: 1000-800-800-600-600-400 meters, ran on the Meyrin site.

Thanks to the generous support of the CERN Running Club, the driving force behind this race, our alumni had the opportunity to participate from anywhere in the world. They tracked their times using the Strava application.
Ten international teams were formed this year, and we were thrilled to have alumni representing Austria, Bangladesh, Belgium, Canada, Cyprus, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, India, Italy, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the USA.

But let's hear from the participants themselves:

"Thanks for organizing this event again this year and for completing our team! We had a lot of fun doing this and supporting each other. It really connected us again and therefore we can clearly say that the CERN Alumni Relations team is reaching their goals very well. Great job!"

"It was a lot of fun to go running and get connected with other CERN alumni."

"I look forward to participating in future alumni events."

"Thanks for hosting this race :) What a nice idea!"

"It's a fun event and I'll definitely join again in the future!"

A heartfelt thank you to all the teams of 2023 and congratulations to the CERN Alumni Medaustron team for their outstanding performance and well-deserved victory!
We eagerly anticipate continuing this tradition next year. So, if you couldn't participate this time, lace up your running shoes and start training for the exhilarating experience that awaits you!
