Women In Technology - Friday Links - 17/11/2023

Published on November 20, 2023

Hello everybody,

Today we are here with a special edition !

TODAY at 13h We have celebrated LGBTQ+ STEM Day around the world and here at CERN.

Individuals whose LGBTQ+ identity is known still face significant stigma and negative bias in the workplace: in recruitment, promotion, assignment to key projects, social events.

Click here (EN) and here (FR) for today’s Bulletin coverage of CERN Directorate’s decision to approve the D&I Programme’s proposal to raise the LGBTQ+ flag next week.

There are not many ways to measure D&I progress at CERN. This is surely one of them.” – Genevieve Guinot, former D&I Programme Leader

Here are some statements from Louise Carvalho ( D&I Programme Leader)  during the flag raising.

“CERN is now the coolest place also on the ground “

“We are all visible today"

As WIT we are also there to support and we congratulate all the parties involved in this great step forward : )

Here some photos from the event:

Are you considering a career change, would you like to find a new job or are you simply interested in what’s available on the job market in different industries?

Make sure you don’t miss the CERN Alumni Third Collisions event, taking place on 9 – 11 February 2024 at CERN, where you’ll have a chance to meet alumni from all over the world, many of them industry leaders in their fields as well as some recruiting companies keen to present their opportunities to people with skills developed at CERN.

You can find more information and get your ticket here: https://alumni.cern/page/third-collisions

The eight edition of the Women and Girls in Science and Technology project will take place during the week of 5 to 9 February 2024. On that occasion, female scientists and engineers will be visiting local schools to inspire younger generations to explore the world of science.

Every year, the project is a huge success (240 presentations to 5220 schoolchildren in 2023!). This is why we are always looking for more CERN female colleagues to participate!

Registrations are now open and will close on Sunday 10 December (23:59).

  • You might find it unexpected to encounter this news in the WIT FL. However, we wish to acknowledge that the 10th of November marks a solemn day of remembrance in Turkey, commemorating the anniversary of the passing of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the esteemed founder of the Republic of Turkey: In a speech in 1923 he said “ There is a straighter and more secure path for us to follow: This is to have Turkish women as our partners in everything, to share our lives with them, and to value them as friends, helpers and colleagues in our scientific, spiritual, social and economic lives.  Women are the pillars of the society and wellspring of the nation.  They must bring up, and educate strong new generations but, they can only perform these tasks if they themselves are enlightened.  Turkish women must be well educated, virtuous, dignified and capable of gaining respect in the society”.
