Navigating the Future: The CERN Alumni Advisory Board's November Meeting Delivers Invaluable Input

Published on November 25, 2023

On the 24th of November, the CERN Alumni Advisory Board (CAAB) convened for its 11th meeting, adopting a hybrid format to discuss critical aspects of the CERN Alumni programme. The CAAB, a group of up to eight dedicated volunteer members, holds the responsibility of offering input, sharing experiences, and providing strategic guidance to the Director-General regarding the CERN Alumni programme and its effective implementation.

Those members who joined in person were treated to an insightful visit of Science Gateway, CERN's recently inaugurated education and outreach center, prior to the CAAB meeting. Chaired by Charlotte Warakaulle, the Director for International Relations, the meeting featured three presentations by Rachel Bray, the Head of CERN Alumni Relations and prepared by the Office for Alumni Relations. These presentations covered achievements from the year 2023, a summary of progress in preparing for Third Collisions, and strategies and priorities for the upcoming year.

Noteworthy accomplishments highlighted during the meeting included an 11% growth in the network in 2023, and a 74% activation rate of accounts on alumni.cern, the dedicated, one-stop-shop for alumni members. Amongst the many achievements of 2023, the year also witnessed the launch of two new regional groups in Germany (Munich) and Spain (Barcelona), and the revival of two dormant groups in Milan-Turin and Vienna. More mentorship relationships were formed in 2023 and CERN alumni contributed a total of 1, 054 volunteer hours, as group managers, speakers, panellists, mentors, interviewees, posting job opportunites and sharing alumni.cern articles widely.

A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to reviewing the progress of Third Collisions, with the board members receiving a comprehensive summary. They actively contributed feedback and input to the ongoing initiatives.  A final presentation outlined the strategic priorities for the coming year.

The meeting marked Maria Gallo's concluding participation, as she completed her third-year mandate. Maria was acknowledged and thanked for her invaluable contributions. Looking ahead to 2024, the Office for Alumni Relations and the CAAB eagerly anticipate the arrival of Agnes Honka, the Head of Careers and Alumni Relations at KIT.

Concluding the meeting, Charlotte Warakaulle expressed gratitude to the CAAB for their input and the alumni team for their hard work and impressive achievements, setting a positive tone for the future endeavors of the CERN Alumni community.
