CERN Alumni Weekly News | Andreas Roth, Showcase your start-up, Physics World finalists- Breakthrough of the Year 2021, International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development, Michel Spiro

Published on December 20, 2021

It's a small world. Back in the 2010s, Andreas Roth's path crossed mine at a conference in Germany and following the launch of the CERN Alumni Network, we collided once more! As Andreas recounts in his interview,
"You never know how far (or close) you are from a big breakthrough, when working at CERN." https://alumni.cern/news/593474
Likewise, you never know where or when you might meet a CERN alum! Check out the 'Around me' functionality on the CERN Alumni app.

We entered the third week of the CERN Alumni advent calendar and shone a light on the amazing start-ups launched by our alumni. To win this week's prize, send the correct answers to these questions to [email protected]. How many alumni start-ups are registered on alumni.cern and in how many countries are they based? Have you created your own start-up? Why not showcase it too! https://alumni.cern/news/585732

Congratulations to researchers from the Antihydrogen Laser Physics Apparatus (ALPHA) and the Baryon Antibaryon Symmetry Experiment (BASE) collaborations at CERN who are amongst the Physics World finalists for the 2021 Breakthrough of the Year: https://physicsworld.com/a/physics-world-announces-its-finalists-for-the-2021-breakthrough-of-the-year/

At the begining of December, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 2022 the International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development (IYBSSD). CERN, along with 26 other scientific organisations, is looking forward to being part of a rich year of activities showcasing the value of basic science for society.
