Women In Technology - Friday Links - 11/03/2022

Published on March 14, 2022

Hello everybody,

here is our selection of Friday links!

Needless to say that the only thing that we can hope right now is that peace will win over political interests.

CERN Council responds to Russian invasion of Ukraine. The 23 Member States of CERN condemn, in the strongest terms, the military invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation, and deplore the resulting loss of life and humanitarian impact, as well as the involvement of Belarus in this unlawful use of force against Ukraine. The CERN Council adopted a Resolution which is available on the webpage: https://home.cern/solidarity-ukraine.

It is estimated that 80,000 women will give birth in the next three months in Ukraine – many of them without access to critical maternal health care. For some, childbirth will be a life-threatening rather than a life-changing experience. https://www.unfpa.org/ukraine-conflict

History has repeatedly shown that the outbreak of conflict and war increases the exposure of women and girls to war crimes. It is for this reason that the United Nations Human Rights Office raise the focus on the need for effective measures to be put in place to protect women and girls from gender-based violence, and to ensure full accountability for those responsible for such crimes https://www.ohchr.org/EN/NewsEvents/Pages/DisplayNews.aspx?NewsID=28201&LangID=E

An article from 2002 describes the impact of armed conflict on women and women’s role in peace-building https://www.unwomen.org/en/digital-library/publications/2002/1/women-war-peace-the-independent-experts-assessment-on-the-impact-of-armed-conflict-on-women-and-women-s-role-in-peace-building-progress-of-the-world-s-women-2002-vol-1

This movie has been made by an all-female production team who live in Donbas, Ukraine, and reflects their experiences during the war in 2014 The Earth is Blue like an Orange.

On a more positive note, here is a video (not so recent, but still nice to watch) about Women in science who changed the world

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W53Ks824GTA

and here an interesting article on the impact that artificial intelligence might have on the working lives of women https://unesdoc.unesco.org/ark:/48223/pf0000380861

For obvious reasons, the International Women’s day wasn’t celebrated, 3 days ago, as enthusiastically as usual. However, here is a nice video explainining the origin of this important day. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PzWnljCpL0

On March 12th the Web is turning 33. Maria Dimou and Florentia Protopsalti prepared this super nice video to celebrate this year's anniversary of the WWW https://indico.cern.ch/event/1136686/attachments/2402980/4113762/VID-20220309-WA0009.mp4 .

If you have missed the meeting, you will find the slides of the WIT 2021 activities review here https://indico.cern.ch/event/1122824/

CERN will be moving to Level 1 – Green on Monday 14 March. This means that activities in person will be again possible and WIT is working on organising some of them. Stay tuned!

WIT is contributing to a UN women event next week that takes place from 14 to 25 March. The event is open to participation, but you’ll need to register: https://www.unwomen.org/en/csw/csw66-2022.

You will find below details related to a lecture from the Academic Training Lecture series that will take place on 15 March:

Lecture 1: Mechanisms of the FLASH effect
Tuesday, 15 March at 11:00 - https://indico.cern.ch/event/1131204/

by Marie-Catherine Vozenin (CHUV)
A re-emergence of research implementing radiation delivery at ultra-high dose rates (UHDR) has triggered intense interest in the radiation sciences and has opened a new field of investigation in radiobiology. Much of the promise of UHDR irradiation involves the FLASH effect, an in vivo biological response observed to maintain anti-tumor efficacy without the normal tissue complications associated with standard doses and dose rate.  The FLASH effect has been validated primarily, using intermediate energy electron beams able to deliver high doses (>7 Gy) in a very short period of time (<200 ms), but has also been found with photon and proton beams. The clinical implications of this new area of research are highly significant and as pioneers in this field, our group has developed a multidisciplinary research team focused on  investigating the mechanisms and clinical translation of the FLASH effect. Here, I will give an overview of the physico-chemical to the biological mechanisms involved in the FLASH effect.

If you are interested, you can visit the website of the Women in Physics student club of the Instituto Superior Técnico of Lisbon https://wip.tecnico.ulisboa.pt .

They organise seminars series with renowned women researchers, where participants get the chance to talk to them about their career.

In particular, the next seminar takes place on 15 March at 15:00 and you will find the details below and here :

Date: 15 March 2022 (Tuesday) at 15:00 CET
Where: Zoom, please register here:

Title of the seminar: Single molecule imaging tools to unravel spatiotemporal compartmentalisation in living cells
Speaker: Prof. María García-Parajo

Outline:
15:00 - 15:40: Scientific seminar, including time for questions

About the Women in Technology (WIT) Community: The aim of this community is to provide an environment in which women are not in the minority when interacting with technology. Our objectives are: to encourage women to play the role of expert; to provide a supportive learning environment; and to build a network between the Women in Technology here at CERN. WIT welcomes members from all genders and all technical fields. Visit cern.ch/wit
