An exit

Sheryl Sandberg, Chief Operating Officer of Meta Platforms, announced her stepping down earlier this week. Despite controversy on her Lean In approach, she is one of its most visible, outspoken and powerful women.

  • Let’s remember her 2016 UC Berkeley commencement speech about resilience and the very best version of yourself:

  • What Sheryl Sandberg’s Exit Reveals About Women’s Progress in Tech.

If we stay at this current rate of progress, it will take way beyond our lifetimes to get to parity; we need exponential change from here.

  • It's not always enough to lean in, because that s**t doesn't work all the time.

And a long-awaited entrance

  • Women must have at least 40% of board seats by July 2026, EU finally agrees after 10-year battle.

On having the system on your side

  • Recently, I was walking home with my eight-year-old son after school when I asked him whether girls play football at playtime. “Some,” he replied. “Do the boys mind?” I probed. Matter of factly, he told me that if any of the boys tried to prevent the girls from joining in, the ball would be taken away from them and given to the girls to play with for the rest of the week. I was buzzing. Buzzing for the girls in his school who have the system on their side. Buzzing because a generation of young boys is being taught that football is for all. It really is that simple.

Long-lasting stereotypes

  • The absence of girls showing bravery and the absence of boys showing affection could be just as problematic as the stereotypic behavior that is portrayed on the screen.

And the Ms. Marvel example

  • Ms. Marvel on a fun interview with Trevor Noah about organically incorporating diversity into the story.
